Look closely: Life in the ‘Knife can be full of surprises

Just when you think you know a place, you discover something weirdly exciting has been going on without your knowledge for some time, and it changes your perspective, yet again. Yellowknife has a seemingly limitless supply of surprises up its sleeve to keep life interesting.

Take Diamond City Roller Derby. I knew we had a fledgling league, but when I stepped into Sissons gym to watch a practice, I longed to lace up in solidarity. I’d never wanted to be a roller girl before, so it hit me like an illegal elbow to the gut. I couldn’t join, of course, because I hate being knocked down, am terrified of it in fact, especially on skates. But pushing boundaries, overcoming fear and stereotypes in a supportive environment…that’s what these women were doing, and that had appeal. See my story here.

It’s a bit like the excitement Donata Platen felt when she discovered there are Bangladeshis living in Yellowknife. A speech pathologist new to town, Platen volunteers at a rehabilitative hospital in Bangladesh and is constantly on the hunt for ways to support its work. You can read about how she and the local Bangladeshi community are coming together to do just that here.

There’s a lot to discover about this city. Is there something you’d like to share about life in Yellowknife, something that might seem old hat to you but could be fascinating to your neighbour? Maybe you just want to scare yourself by trying something completely new, something creative – like writing a story. I’m here to help you, just email a few lines about your idea to editor@edgeyk.ca.

Go ahead, try it. You may surprise yourself…
