Seven Arrested in YK Drug Bust

The RCMP executed four search warrants in Yellowknife on Friday and arrested seven people. They also seized four firearms, about 300 grams of crack cocaine and more than $50,000 in cash. “This group is part of a larger network operating throughout Canada, and it is concerning that they were attempting to establish a foothold in Yellowknife,” says RCMP Sgt. Dean Riou. The operation targeted a group of people who had recently set up a drug network.

Inuvik marijuana meeting draws a crowd

About 20 people showed up to a GNWT information session held in Inuvik on Monday to discuss concerns about everything from product quality to impaired driving and impacts on the workplace. The federal government is planning to legalize cannabis in July 2018 but leaving it up to provinces and territories to implement their own laws. The Yellowknife session is Thursday at 7:30 pm at the Explorer Hotel.

Mackenzie again elected Tlicho Grand Chief

George Mackenzie has been elected Tlicho Grand Chief for the second time, defeating two-term Grand Chief Eddie Erasmus. In 2005, Mackenzie was also elected Grand Chief in 2005, shortly after the Tlicho gained self-governance. On Monday, Mackenzie received 677 votes, Erasmus 486 and Charlie Nitsiza 227 and Russell Drybones 153.

New Sobering Centre to be in downtown building

A new downtown location recently home to Canarctic Graphics has been confirmed by the territorial government as the future home of the city’s day shelter and sobering centre. The location will undergo extensive renovations to ensure it meets the program requirements. Since opening in July, an average of 10 clients/day have been accessing the temporary sobering centre at the Yellowknife Community Arena.
