Sports Update: YK Arena Football League

Since its inception, the YKAFL has been a top-heavy league. In this vein, this year’s regular season standings are very reminiscent of years past – with the top three teams clearly in a class of their own, a log jam in the middle, and two winless squads desperately trying to climb out of the basement.

The Elite

Carried by exceptional QB play and the league’s stingiest defense, the Tamarack Titans have cruised to a blemish-free campaign and sit atop the rankings at 5-0.

As was the case last year, the NDS Regulators and Kasteelers are closely nipping at the Titans’ heals with 4-1 records. The Kasteelers have endured some early season struggles, but always save their best football for the post-season and have multiple banners hanging from the Fieldhouse rafters to prove this. Right now, we don’t really know who the Regulators are. So far they’ve enjoyed the league’s weakest schedule, played only two games with their starting QB under centre, and haven’t enjoyed much post-season success in previous seasons.

Second-Tier Teams

The St. Pat’s Irish Seniors, Just Fitness Giants, Elks Saints, and Fire Prevention Raiders comprise the league’s second tier. While the Raiders and Giants are the most likely to rise to the top of this group, at this point neither is a serious Super Bowl candidate.

Battle of the Basement

This week’s match-up between the Vikings and St. Pat’s Irish Juniors has been dubbed the Toilet Bowl by local pundits. With both teams currently without a win, this game has little more at stake than bragging rights.
