There’s nothing quite like standing on the southern shores of Great Slave Lake, just outside of Hay River, and watching the aurora borealis dance. The entire town is situated right in the prime viewing belt for the Northern Lights, but aurora chasers will tell you that the beach is the premiere spot to watch the show. The rule of thumb, according to one veteran photographer, is “anywhere with open sky.”
The most spectacular displays of the phenomenon happen during the fall season, from late August through to September, but the Aurora has been known to flare up at all times of year. One way to check out the likelihood of the Northern Lights is to visit Astronomy North’s aurora forecast site.
If you’re looking for a guided tour experience, several tour operators in and around the Hay River area offer a variety of ways to take in the Lights. Visit Spectacular NWT for more information.
