The Summer Student

Old Town Versifier: Anthony Foliot

It’s only been a couple years

since High School with all your peers

You settled in to a career

Article continues below advertisement

and oh the times you had

You bought yourself some brand new slacks

some shirts and ties, your shoes are black

You scored yourself an Old Town shack

yes things are pretty rad

But something is amiss it seems

your nightly sleep is filled with dreams

that don’t make up a hill of beans

’till you read on your iPad

THE RUMOURS OF GOSSIP CITY ARE FLYING ALL AROUND

AND A LITTLE BIRDY TELLS YOU THAT SHE CAME BACK TO TOWN.

Oh no, you wondered, what to do?

She broke your heart, she left you blue

You hoped by now, for someone new

yet things still aren’t so bad

‘Cause there’s that redhead every day

Who serves you mocha cream latte

and giggles every time you say

“it’s the best I’ve ever had”

You’re walking west on fifty third

and thinking ’bout that gossip’s bird

who just last night you overheard

say she’s an undergrad

Pretty soon and the day is nigh

on the arm of another guy

around some corner she’ll say “Hi”

and then things will be bad

You’ll mope down Franklin Avenue

You’ll kick some stones and still be blue

The redhead asks “what’s up with you?”

then once again you’re glad

The redhead always will be there

The summer girl just doesn’t care

She doesn’t have the time to spare

not even if she had

So go and buy a mocha-joe

see the redhead and let her know

you’d like to take her to the show

put on the charm a tad

the summer student will be gone

to college boys who’ll wait upon

You didn’t get to be “Dear John”

pretty good, not bad.
