Location: Inuvik, NWT

The Gwich’in Development Corporation (GDC), 100% owned by the Gwich’in Tribal Council (GTC), is an Indigenous investment company with a mandate to increase revenues through development activities occurring within the Gwich’in Settlement Area (GSA) in the Northwest Territories and broadening its geographic diversity. By forming partnerships with experienced companies who have an interest in resources and opportunities existing within the GSA, the GDC has worked to succeed in the competitive economy by combining outside expertise and technology with traditional knowledge and experience of geography and culture. GDC’s vision is to generate sustainable long-term wealth for all Gwich’in Participants and create opportunities that enrich the lives of people in the Gwich’in Settlement Area.

Working with the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) provides effective and dynamic leadership to the organization while ensuring strategic and financial objectives are developed and achieved. The CEO will deliver the GDC Strategic Plan and Operating Budget, and will manage existing partnerships and business relationships, primarily with the Government and other Indigenous Nations. The CEO will also execute the business strategy of the organization to generate new revenue sources while working collaboratively with the GTC and local community development to structure the organization appropriately and improve financial results while developing the potential of Gwich’in businesses and people.

The ideal candidate is an experienced business investment or general management executive with demonstrated success creating profits and wealth in an investment/holding or Indigenous development company, private equity firm or growth-oriented corporate environment. With strong business and financial acumen, this individual will be a strategic and visionary thinker with an ability and willingness to be very hands on while working with the Board of Directors and the Chair of GDC who is also the Grand Chief of the Gwich’in Tribal Council. This individual will have cross-cultural experience and is sensitive to issues of inclusion and is able to implement programs related to workplace diversity. The ideal candidate will be a driven self-starter who is results-oriented, enthusiastic, and motivated by creating a better future for Canada’s North and its Indigenous People.

Integrity, sound business ethics and alignment with Gwich’in values will be critical to success in this role due to the need for relationship-building across the GSA and the Northwest Territories. This position is based in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, with some travel to Yellowknife, Edmonton, Whitehorse and to the other three Gwich’in communities of Aklavik, Teetł’it Zheh (Fort McPherson) and Tsiigehtchic.
