Description
The Qmunity Camp First Aider will provide first aid, CPR and emergency care for staff, youth and visiting facilitators at the Qmunity Camp 2023 session. The Camp First Aider is expected to stay overnight at Qmunity Camp at the Camp Connections Site, km 57 on the Ingraham Trail outside of Yellowknife, NT for nearly the entire camp session August 17th – 25th. The First Aider will also manage the dispensary of youth medications, be aware of youth allergies, and maintain Qmunity Camp’s first aid supplies. The First Aider will be responsible for accompanying staff, youth and/or volunteers to Stanton Territorial Hospital if a severe incident arises. All first aid supplies will be purchased and provided by Qmunity Camp.
Responsibilities
Pre-Camp August 15th – 16th
- Participate in staff training and orientation
- Assist with load-in of supplies and site preparation
Pre-Camp August 17th
- Assist in Camper arrivals supporting the Camp Director
- Familiarize with any and all youth physical health needs, such as allergies and conditions and conduct a lice check
During Camp August 18th – 24th
- Provide first aid care as needed
- Provide emergency care in a first-responder capacity
- Assess serious injuries and accompany staff, youth and/or volunteers to Stanton Territorial Hospital if necessary
- Travel on the youth canoe trip to provide first aid care as needed
- Dispense youth medication (prescribed or over-counter)
Post-Camp August 25th
- Assist with the packing of all camp supplies and cleaning of the site
- Participate in end-of-season debrief and evaluation
Qualifications
Qmunity Camp NWT is an organization dedicated to providing inclusive and safe on the land opportunities to 2SLGBTQIPA+ First Nations, Inuit and Metis youth in the NWT. We prioritize applications from those who identify within 2SLGBTQIPA+ First Nations, Inuit and Metis and/or another racialized communities.
- Be 19 years old or older
- Excellent communication skills and ability to motivate and work with others
- Minimum two years of first aid experience
- Valid first aid / CPR certification or confirmation of in-date professional certification (nurse, nurse practitioner, doctor, EMT, etc.)
- Experience with canoeing an asset
- Valid Driver’s license is required
- Mandatory Criminal Record Check + Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Experience in on the land camp settings is considered an asset
- Knowledge of Settler Colonial systems is required
