Description

Camp Leaders-in-Training (LiTs) will be mentored by two Camp Leaders on how to build relationships, participate in camp activities, and ensure youth needs are being met. LiTs are expected to stay overnight at the Qmunity Camp site for two days of staff orientation, the duration of the camp, and one additional day to debrief. All LiTs will work cooperatively and effectively with staff, guest facilitators, volunteers and will be overseen by the Camp Director and Camp Manager.

CONTRACT: August 21st to 30th, 2021

Responsibilities

Pre-Camp

  • Participate in staff training and orientation
  • Assist with load-in of supplies and site preparation

 During Camp

  • Engage with youth at all times; be open, communicative, and supportive
  • Ensure youth are supervised at all times
  • Participate in activities with enthusiasm and energy
  • Practice leadership skills learned in training, and communicate effectively with mentors
  • Assist with additional tasks as needed
  • Adhere to the program plan, and contribute creativity, flexibility and ingenuity
  • Respect all equipment and facilities, and ensures proper care, use, and maintenance of them
  • Redirect youth to Camp Leaders and upper management as needed
  • Help prepare/set-up/supervise games and activities as needed

Post-Camp

  • Assist with the tear-down of camp
  • Preparing an accurate and organized inventory of craft, sport, first aid and other supplies
  • Participate in end of season debrief and evaluation

Qualifications

The Rainbow Coalition of Yellowknife is an organization governed by mostly youth, and therefore are prioritizing hiring people who our organization recognizes as youth (people under 30). Preference will also be  given to applicants who self-identify as Black, First Nations, Inuit, Metis, and/or another racialized community.

 

  • Be 18 to 24 years old
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to motivate and work with others
  • Summer camp experience is an asset
  • Enjoys working with youth from pre-teens to late-teens and building rapport
  • Knowledge of Northern communities and cultures is an asset
  • NLS certification (lifeguarding) is an asset
  • Mandatory Criminal Record Check + Vulnerable Sector Screening 
  • Personal, lived understanding of 2SLGBTQIA+ identity is preferred but not required
