Description

This is a Group Home located in Fort Smith, NT on Polar Cres. The position is for 1 live-in adult or 1 live-in couple that will be the primary caregivers for up to 6 children. Accommodations and utilities and food are provided. The available beds may be used to provide emergency and short term placements from the foster care system. Ages can range from infants to 18 years old from a wide range of social backgrounds. You will need enthusiasm to work with children, to be easy to relate to and a desire to make a difference.

Responsibilities

  • Follow program set out by supervisor that would include a daily schedule Provide food for each child/youth at the minimum standard
  • Ensure the accommodation gives adequate protection from the elements and conforms to health and safety regulations established by law.
  • Ensure that each child/youth receives prompt medical care when required according to the guidelines provided by the Director of Child, Family and Community Wellness.

  • Notify the Child Protection Worker, or the supervisor (in case child protection worker is not available), or the on-call child protection worker (after hours) in the event of illness, accident, or other serious occurrences as soon as possible
  • Ensure, to the best of ability, that each child's/youth's social and emotional needs are met
  • Notify Manager in advance of any changes in living arrangements
  • Report Manager, any significant emotional, physical, behavioral, or social changes with respect to the child/youth and provide a written report to the executive director accordingly.
  • Receive Child Protection Worker and FFCNWT assigned employees when visiting the foster home facility with or without notice.
  • Ensure that each child/youth attends all scheduled appointments
  • Understand, support, and comply with each child/youth case plan providing the Child Protection Worker with feedback on the progress of the case plan
  • Provide a weekly report to the Manager on each child/youth, their progress or any other information should be provided.
  • Report all maintenance requirements, physical damage to the structure, replacement required for appliances (fridge, stove, washer/dryer, etc.), or replacement for furnishings to the executive director and confirm back when maintenance or replacement is done.
  • Acquire pre-approval to all medical expenses of each child/youth that are not covered by the NWT Health Care Insurance or any other agency or plan

Qualifications

Excellent communication skills and ability to motivate and work with others Experience working with children with physical, mental health and neurological diversity such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD), Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Anxiety and Trauma. Must be extremely punctual and reliable Strong communication skills Strong organizational skills Willing to live in group home for the term Experience working with children and youth with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, a trauma background, and various behavioral needs Enthusiasm and desire to work with children and youth and make a positive impact on their life Knowledge of northern First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures
