Northern Mosaic Network (NMN) is seeking a candidate for the Mental Health + Family Support Coordinator position. The person in this position provides mental health support through peer support appointments, coordinates NMN’s child and family programs, develops resources, raises awareness to 2SLGBTQIPA+ mental health issues, oversees a new trans support fund, and connects 2SLGBTQIPA+ people, their families and their allies to relevant resources and supports, and supporting other projects and programs that NMN takes on.

Working Conditions

The successful candidate can be located in any community in the NWT provided you have access to reliable internet. This position is full-time, meaning an average of 37.5 hours per week. Specific hours will be discussed during the interview process as NMN staff have flexible schedules.

If located in Yellowknife or surrounding communities, you can expect to report to the NMN Main Office located at 5112 52nd Street (flexibility to work part-time from home is an option after the first three months). If not located in Yellowknife or surrounding communities to be able to commute to the NMN Main Office, you can expect to work from home with a provided laptop, work phone and printer and regular check-ins during the first three months while you are onboarded.

Compensation: $35.00/hour + Benefits + Northern Bonus

Employment Term: January 16th, 2023 to March 31st, 2024 (position to be extended dependent on funding)

Duties

Duties & Responsibilities

Peer Support Appointment Program: 2SLGBTQIPA+ people, their families, and Northerners in general are able to make peer support appointments for a variety of reasons. Responsibilities include promoting this program, monitoring applications that come through, conducting peer support appointments, assigning volunteers to peer support appointments when needed, and making referrals to additional opportunities for support and/or other aspects of NMN and its programming.

Child + Family Program Coordination: Coordinating and facilitating monthly programs (a support group for 2SLGBTQIPA+ youth under 12, a support group for parents of 2SLGBTQIPA+ people that are in the beginning stages of accepting their child’s identity, support group for parents of 2SLGBTQIPA+ people that have children with established identities, a playgroup for children under 10 [in-person in Yellowknife only], an informal space to provide resources and parenting tips, and a support group for 2SLGBTQIPA+ parents). Some of these programs are new, and some have established volunteers and extended history that will help with planning and facilitation expectations.

Trans Support Fund: NMN has received funding to be able to purchase gender-affirming products for trans and gender-diverse people, as well as to pay for gender marker and name change paperwork. Set-up and ongoing maintenance of this fund are responsibilities under this position.

Resource Development: NMN has received funding to create a 12-month mental health zine with each month featuring on different aspects of mental health and its challenges in relation to the 2SLGBTQIPA+ community. The creation of this series, as well as the coordination of artists/artwork, promotion of the project, and overall design are responsibilities under this position.

Youth Advisory Committee: NMN is creating a youth advisory committee with representation from each of the regions. Part of this position’s responsibilities include supporting the creation and development of the Committee.

Budgeting and Grant Writing: Manage a small budget and apply for additional funding to support the work of this position.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience

Organizational Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience in working for a non-profit organization

  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, including youth - amount of experience will be considered in lieu of formal education

  • Experience working in youth-centred spaces or organizations

  • Experience with frontline service delivery

  • Knowledge of and experience working with Black, Indigenous and racialized communities

  • Historical context of land and Indigenous groups in the NWT

  • Capable of working collaboratively with a team, as well as independently

  • Grant writing experience considered an asset

  • Knowledge of technology such as G Suite, Zoom, Canva, Discord and social media

  • Criminal Record Check with clear Vulnerable Sector Screening required

Position-Specific Qualifications & Experience

  • Formal mental health training (example: diploma or degree in social work, counselling, psychology, etc.)

  • Experience in providing mental health services

  • Program facilitation - amount of experience will be considered in lieu of formal education

  • Project management - minimum 1 year of experience

  • Knowledge of early childhood and/or working with complex family dynamics considered an asset

  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to make phone calls and craft emails
