A community-based action research project based in Yellowknife, Ndilo and Dettah (Northwest Territories) is being designed by Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) working in partnership with the Yellowknives Dene First Nation Government (YKDFN). The study will investigate the burden of chronic stress and the relative contribution of sources of stress related to Giant Mine; identify sub-communities in the study area who have higher levels of chronic stress and examine their unique experiences of the Giant Mine; and understand the unique health and social needs of affected communities to inform healing and mitigation activities.

The study is seeking a project manager with excellent organizing skills to help prepare the study for implementation, and to oversee all aspects of study implementation, including: research team members, study promotion and volunteer recruitment; collection of surveys and biomarkers; provision of support and care for participants; reporting activities for community and stakeholder audiences.

Responsibilities

Project Administration

  • Assist with management of all the administrative, logistical, financial, and communication aspects of the program;
  • Participate in semi-regular advisory committee, technical committee, and other meetings as necessary, and prepare minutes;
  • Manage program budget;
  • Interview and hire local staff; prepare work contracts;
  • Assist in preparing training materials i.e. guidelines for data collection, sampling procedures, care for participants, etc;
  • Purchase program supplies;
  • Monitor and evaluate adherence to study protocols during data collection phase.
  • Contact and liaise project activities with NdiI9, Dettah and Yellowknife communities in coordination with

 

      YKDFN study coordinator

  • Communicate regularly with, and coordinate program activities by working closely with other members of the research team;
  • Travel to communities when appropriate, as a representative of the study (most community engagement in Ndilo and Dettah will be done by YKDFN study coordinator;
  • Engage community organizations to act as collaborators in recruitment activities;
  • Engage community health and social service organizations to prepare for supporting participants during and after data collection phase;
  • Attend stakeholder meetings as a representative of the study;
  • Ensure consistency of communication with community organizations on the next steps such as:
  • Make public and increase visibility of the study across Yellowknife, Ndilo and Dettah;
  • Coordinate data collection activities;
  • Recruit Research Assistants (RAs); Nurses; Counsellors;
  • Organize the secure storage of supplies in Yellowknife, the completed consent forms, questionnaires, and biological and other allostatic load measures;
  • Engage identified vulnerable communities to interpret study findings;
  • Coordinate community wellness activities related to participant after-care

 

      Fieldwork Support

  • Assist in coordinating training of RAs and nurses;
  • Support RAs, nurses and researchers during the data collection periods;
  • Manage staff salary and other expenses;
  • Maintain regular communication with all staff to ensure that the program follows the agreed timelines and protocols;
  • Prepare regular updates to the PI, YKDFN, NSMA and advisory committee;
  • Maintain availability for travel, often with tight deadlines, between Ndilo, Dettah and Yellowknife communities, as needed.

Community Communication and Engagement

  • Work together with CIRNAC's communication and engagement staff as well as the Giant Mine Oversight Board, the Project Manager will be responsible for developing the following materials and/or products: brochure, posters, program website, announcements on radio/newspapers, recruitment letters, community presentations, newsletters, and other materials, as necessary.
  • Assist with developing community engagement strategies and messages before, during and after data collection;
  • Oversee developing and maintaining program website, and Facebook;

      Shipping and Storage of Research Supplies

  • The Project Manager will arrange secure storage of research supplies, biological allostatic load samples, and data files.
  • The Project Manager will coordinate and track the transportation of supplies, samples and data files to Juniper Health (Yellowknife) and DynaLab (Edmonton).

 

      Reporting

  • The Project Manager will provide program updates on timeline of activities, community engagement, data collection, and other issues to the PI, GNWT project manager, CIRNAC (funder) and the study advisory committee, on a regular basis.
  • The Project Manager will compose agendas and participate in Advisory Committee meetings and provide updates on the monitoring program.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will have experience working independently in a demanding role with significant responsibilities and accountabilities, including working with confidential materials and management of human resources and a budget
  • A Master's Degree in a related discipline or four years of experience with project management (or some combination of relevant education and experience) is desired; experience with managing a research study, including budget tracking, is an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and participate in meetings and conference calls with key internal and/or external partners/stakeholders; capture and communicate action items; facilitate follow-up on action items
  • Experience developing and using gantt charts and other project management tools
  • Capacity to develop training materials and implement training of research team members
