We are looking for a Water and Regulatory Project Specialist to join the Diavik Closure Team and ensure the closure study output is setup to achieve reclamation performance that will meet regulatory requirements and facilitate relinquishment.

Reporting to the Principal Advisor Closure Readiness and working in a diverse group within the Closure Department, you will be responsible for:

  • Interpreting and assessing the feasibility and soundness of proposed closure designs in relation to environmental impacts and against regulatory approvals and identifying issues and recommending solutions or best practices.
  • Leading the planning and implementation of closure research projects, reclamation trials and field sampling programs and recommending new programs that will facilitate successful planning and permitting of reclamation activities.
  • Managing engineering service provider and specialist consultants to deliver necessary updates to site water and chemical balance, the post-closure integrated mine site and Lac de Gras hydrodynamic model and related post-closure Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessments.
  • Work with Communities and Social Performance team to engage IGOs and ensure their involvement in design, development and implementation of closure monitoring programs.
  • Preparation and technical review of required regulatory submissions and public reviews including the Final Closure and Reclamation Plan and Post-Closure Monitoring and Maintenance Plans.

What you’ll bring

  • Degree related to Environmental engineering/sciences with at least 5 years of experience in environmental program management and/or regulatory compliance;
  • Technical understanding of all water, air and waste operations, wildlife and environmental management and regulatory requirements;
  • Talented in technical writing and editing;
  • Previous regulatory experience – regulator or regulated perspective;
  • Northwest Territories regulatory experience would be an asset;
  • Demonstrated excellent communications and inter-personal skills

Northern residency and experience working in a cross-cultural environment, coupled with knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities presented to those living in the North, are assets.
