The Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) is a not-for-profit organization, established in 1997 to help communities, consumers, producers, regulators and policy makers to work together to reduce the costs of environmental impacts of energy and utility services in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The AEA is supported by various territorial departments and agencies, and does fee-for-service work in the private sector. The AEA is currently recruiting a Regional Energy Project Coordinator.
This position is located at the Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) regional office in Inuvik, but will also involve some travel to Northwest Territories (NWT) communities near Inuvik.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
AEA is a non-profit organization whose mission is:
To promote and facilitate the adoption of efficient and renewable energy practices by all members of NWT society.
Reporting to the Executive Director and working together with the AEA team, the Project Coordinator’s role is to assist and support NWT individuals, businesses, institutions and communities to implement projects that reduce their energy costs and reduce their energy related greenhouse gas emissions.
The Project Coordinator liaises with appropriate AEA staff for advice, consultation and completion of community projects.
- Coordinating Team Members
The Project Coordinator is not responsible for the supervision of other AEA staff or sub-contractors. The AEA has a flat organizational structure with a matrix team approach where project leaders manage work plans for specific projects that require the participation of other AEA staff members. The Project Coordinator is expected to coordinate the work and tasks assigned to his/her team members and to keep the Operations Manager informed.
- Managing Budgets and Programs
The Regional Energy Project Coordinator will be responsible for:
- Supporting the AEA team in writing proposals and applications for funding;
- Supporting the AEA team in reporting back to clients and funding agencies.
- Providing High Quality Energy Project Support Services to AEA Clients
The objectives of the Regional Office program are to:
- Increase the financial savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions resulting from AEA’s work with home owners in the region by assisting home owners to overcome the barriers they face in implementing the AEA’s advice. This will be measured by evaluating the impact of AEA’s programs and projects completed, compared to previous fiscal years.
- Increase the financial savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions resulting from the AEA’s work with building owners in the region by assisting building owners to overcome the barriers they face in implementing the AEA’s advice. This will be measured by evaluating the impact of any projects that AEA assists in completing, along with other related projects.
- Increase the financial savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions resulting from the AEA’s work with vehicle owners in the region.
The tasks of the Regional Energy Project Coordinator are to:
- Provide basic advice and knowledge on current “northern best energy practices” in the fields of community energy planning, renewable energy and energy efficiency to the public in the town of Inuvik and the nearby communities;
- Complete training in order to keep up to date on current best practices and provide top quality basic advice on energy;
- Work with the AEA’s Energy Management Specialists in Yellowknife to provide expert advice on current “northern best energy practices” in the fields of community energy planning, renewable energy and energy efficiency to the public in the town of Inuvik and the other communities of the Beaufort–Delta region;
- Ensure that individuals, businesses, institutions and governments in the town of Inuvik and the other communities of the Beaufort–Delta region are able to get the technical support they need to complete energy projects – either through AEA or outside sources;
- Deliver presentations on energy and AEA’s programs to schools, individuals (homeowners), businesses and institutions (building owners) and other interested groups in the town of Inuvik and the other communities of the Beaufort–Delta region;
- Network with individuals, businesses, institutions and governments in Inuvik and nearby communities to identify chances to make energy projects happen;
- Facilitate the relationship between individuals, businesses, institutions and governments in the town of Inuvik and the other communities of the Beaufort–Delta region with respect to potential funding sources;
- Assist individual homeowners to sign up for home energy evaluations and implement projects that are recommended related to their community energy plans;
- Assist individual businesses and institutions to monitor their energy usage, identify projects that would reduce their fuels bills and greenhouse gas emissions and then follow up to help them implement the projects;
- Support the AEA team in writing educational materials, creating workshops and maintaining the content of the AEA website;
- Support the AEA team in writing proposals and applications for funding;
- Support the AEA team in reporting back to clients and funding agencies;
- Support other members of the AEA team as directed by the Executive Director;
- Additional activities that may be assigned by the Executive Director.
The position will require travel to NWT communities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The following are required qualifications:
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook;
- Post-secondary education and/or relevant work experience;
- An ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing;
- An ability to work with the public and co-workers in a respectful and professional manner;
- An ability to assume responsibility without direct supervision, to make decisions, exercise initiative and judgment, prioritize work assignments and meet deadlines while working within a team environment.
The following are preferred qualifications:
- An undergraduate degree with an energy conservation and/or alternative energy focus, or equivalent knowledge and experience acquired through work experience;
- A minimum of two years of experience in a related position;
- Experience working with the people, communities, governments and cultures of the NWT;
- A personal interest in energy and climate change issues;
- Ability to speak, write or understand any of the NWT’s official languages in addition to English.
Time is split between in-office work and time spent in the field supporting and overseeing project deliverables. The incumbent spends about 30 to 60 days per year in communities outside their home.
There is limited physical effort required for this position; however, the incumbent will need to be comfortable travelling in small aircraft at different times of the year.
A major amount of the work is completed indoors. Some extreme weather may be experienced on site and during community visits.
There is a need for attention to detail.
The incumbent may be away from home about 12 times per year traveling to NWT communities for periods of up to 5 days in unfamiliar communities with limited amenities resulting in a disruption of family and social life.
