Description

This position is a key member of the Spruce Bough Shelter located at 4115 Franklin Ave (old Arnica Inn), one of the programs operated by the Yellowknife Women's Society.

*We are in need of Evening and Night Shift Staff*

The Support Worker provides direct support/supervision to shelter residents within the Shelter and ensures services are professionally provided to residents.

 

Scope

  • The Support Worker fills in for program employees when necessary and provides direct participant support when program needs require.
  • The worker oversees the residents living at the Spruce Bough to ensure they are safe and abiding by the shelter rules.
  • The worker ensures residents and program users are treated professionally and ensures files, records and administrative tools are professionally implemented and maintained.
  • The worker ensures the Centre premises are clean, safe and maintained and all daily duties are completed as assigned.
  • The occupant will serve as a role model for positive and fair attitude and behaviors.

Responsibilities

  • Empower clients and provide support and crisis intervention through trauma-informed care.
  • Communication skills
  • Follow and enforce Shelter Guidelines, Policies, and Procedures with Shelter Guests.
  • Support and assist with their shelter needs as they arise (ex. questions, concerns, hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, bedding, food and more).
  • Maintain safety and security of shelter property, and report concerns to Shelter Manager/On-Call or to the authorities.
  • Ensure the privacy and safety of clients by not confirming identity , and by not allowing anyone other than guests, staff, case workers or law enforcement on the premises.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of shelter through performing housekeeping tasks outlined in Staff Task Lists (ex. sweeping, mopping, disinfecting).
  • Complete Shelter room checks with Shelter Manager as requested.
  • Complete Shelter Inventory and organizational/shelter upkeep duties as assigned.
  • Perform basic maintenance as needed (ex. changing light bulbs, plunging toilets) and report any major maintenance issues to Day Staff.
  • Document in shift notes at least once per shift and complete proper documentation; including Shift exchange, task list checks off lists, incident reports, and mandated reporter documentation/reporting duties.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in social work, plus one years experience within a non-profit preferred.  A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience providing supports to homeless people from diverse backgrounds that struggle with a myriad of challenges.
  • Broad knowledge of social and economic issues facing Northern People and in particular, First Nations, Inuit and Inuvialuit communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to work cooperatively and professionally as part of a team and with other agencies and community partners.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Proof of COVID 19 Vaccination and criminal records check.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Non Violent Crisis Intervention Certification preferred
