Blachford Lake Lodge is an upscale Northern fly-in wilderness resort, located 100km east of Yellowknife in Canada’s Northwest Territories. In the heart of the Canadian wilderness, the lodge is comprised of 5 lodge rooms and 5 guest cabins. While at the lodge, guests can enjoy a variety of seasonal activities as well as the best Northern Lights viewing in the world. Winter guest activities include, but are not limited to cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, hiking, skating, ice fishing, hockey, handicrafts, wildlife tracks, aurora viewing and other winter activities. In the summer guest activities include, but are not limited to fishing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, shore lunches, fall aurora viewing, and hiking.

As the Systems Manager, it is your job to make sure that every guest has a safe and enjoyable stay at Blachford Lake Lodge. You are responsible for ensuring that all lodge systems are run efficiently, swiftly, and out of sight of guests, whenever possible. You are responsible for overseeing and organizing the use of all lodge machinery and tools, and are responsible for large capital projects, as well as daily maintenance projects. You are also responsible for providing guiding programming for guests be it fishing trips, off grid hiking and camping, snowmobile tours, or more. You thrive on attention to detail and are safety oriented, and enjoy interacting with all visitors that arrive at Blachford Lake Lodge. You understand the importance of connecting with guests during their stay, and keeping all systems well maintained.

You are a true people person, yet thrive on the challenge of living in a remote, off grid location for long periods of time. You are adventurous and love the outdoors. You are an independent self-starter, a hard-worker and team player. You have an eye for detail and take the initiative to do whatever needs to be done to ensure that each guest has an incredible experience at Blachford Lake Lodge.

You will work closely, in partnership with the Yellowknife team (staff, contractors, etc.) to ensure that all daily tasks, site maintenance and guest services are completed to a high standard.

Responsibilities

Systems Manager tasks:

  • Monitor tank levels and pump diesel for oil boiler, generators, and snowmobile barn
  • Change propane tanks when empty for generator shed heater, comfort station, and kitchen fill hopper for pellet boiler daily
  • Move pellet bags, propane tanks, gas and diesel barrels from the lake to storing areas
  • Keep track of and update office on fuel inventory and manage with the Expeditor what should be sent out to the lodge
  • Monitor water level daily and pump water when necessary. Ensure chlorine supply is maintained and filter cleaned/changed regularly
  • Pump the clivus toilet system daily, turn clivus weekly
  • Refuel gas in snowmobiles as necessary
  • Prepare and take down garbage and recycling on plane days
  • Clean and sharpen chainsaws as necessary
  • Cut wood to length for wood stoves, chop and stack outside all guest cabins, lodge and staff cabins
  • Prepare kindling as required
  • Monitor battery charge and start/turn off generator as necessary (morning and night)
  • Record lodge water usage weekly
  • Empty, deep clean, and refill hot tub as necessary (weekly)
  • Test water and record data, light clean and add any chemicals needed for hot tub (daily)
  • Monitor and maintain hot tub temperature
  • Fix/perform maintenance on anything that breaks or stops working
  • Assist lodge manager in any other tasks needed
  • Reflect at all times a commitment to environmental sustainability
  • Reflect at all times a commitment to risk management and safety, and report any unsafe conditions to the lodge manager
  • Respect all machinery and equipment, report damage and maintenance issues immediately

Lead Guide Tasks:

  • Demonstrate high levels of energy and enthusiasm at all times
  • Act as a professional, knowledgeable guide on the land through different seasons
  • Take guests on fishing/boating tours ranging from 5-40km in length
  • Ensure equipment is neatly put away after tours, and that everything is in working condition
  • Keep track of when guests depart and ensure that guests return to the lodge. Check on guests with snowmobile/quad if they are gone longer than normal
  • Prepare safety/first aid bag including inreach for emergencies and take on all tours
  • Provide safety briefing and basic operation instructions for any equipment used
  • Ensure guests are safe and assist them with any problems during tours
  • Provide guests with information on the local surroundings during the tour
  • Identify and point out wildlife tracks
  • Serve hot chocolate/tea during the tour
  • Prepare equipment/supplies for any tour (baits, hooks, roads, snowmobiles, boats,etc)

Qualifications

  • Wilderness first aid or higher
  • Knowledge of maintenance energy systems
  • Driver’s License (Class 5)
  • Boat/Pleasure Craft License
  • Chainsaw Operators License
  • PAL/Firearms License
  • Fall Protection Hazards Certificate
  • Ice Safety and Rescue Certificate
  • WHIMIS and MSDS Hazardous Waste Certificates
  • Post-Secondary/trade training in mechanics considered an asset
  • Criminal Record Check
  • Previous experience working at a remote wilderness lodge considered an asset
  • Previous experience working/living in a circum-polar location considered an asset
  • Previous guiding experience considered an asset
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs +
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to speak English fluently
  • Working knowledge of a second language considered an asset
