Description
The Youth Centre Worker is responsible to mentor, interact with and supervise youth (ages 12-24). The position will also assist to plan and facilitate activities and complete general cleaning/maintenance duties as assigned.
Job start date is early July 2021. 20-40 hours / week - This position is seasonal (during summer 2021) with potential to extend into a permanent position.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates positive example through leadership, skill building and role modeling
- Mentor and coach youth to make good choices
- Take Initiative and complete assigned chores without reminders. Asks for further direction and clarification
- In cooperation with the youth centre manager, will plan, facilitate and supervise recreation programs including arts and crafts, theme nights, etc.
- Interacts with the youth, demonstrate skills, build relationships, and problem solving
- Enforce rules and guidelines for the Resource Centre as determined
- Clean the Centre by sweeping/mopping/vacuum and removing garbage
- Perform seasonal duties including snow clearing, lawn maintenance, etc.
- Refill dispensers, prepare recycling and organize cabinets/storage
- Meal preparation and clean up, store groceries and donations
- Conduct perimeter safety and security checks hourly (removing debris)
- Ensure youth complete the sign in process and adhere to expectations
- Engage in general maintenance repairs/replacement including painting, replacing bulbs, etc.
- Avoid distractions from personal conversations or devices
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
- Supervise youth in common areas to ensure that boundaries are adhered to at all times
- Provide supervision that is appropriate to the youth’s developmental age
- Recognize potential emergency situations and intervene
- Analyze situations accurately to mitigate risks
- Develop strategies to deal with potentially dangerous situations; i.e., suicide threats, youth’s aggressive behavior
- Ensure safety risks are identified and the appropriate intervention is applied
- Complete safety plans with youth where appropriate
- Actively support the mission, vision and goals of Home Base YK (Sidedoor)
- Determine with the team, all objectives of the program
- Work collaboratively with other staff within the organization
- Actively participate in team meetings, professional development activities, staff retreat and other Centre activities
- Work in partnership with other community organizations
- Work in close partnership with other youth workers and program workers at Home Base YK
Qualifications
- Punctual and reliable
- Strong social and emotional skills
- Strong communication skills necessary to confidently communicate with youth, coworkers, supervisors, people in the community, professional people, law enforcement, court workers, education workers, etc.
- Experiencing working with youth, youth who are experiencing homelessness, youth who have experienced varying levels of trauma, and youth with disabilities(ies)
- An understanding of homelessness in Canada, homelessness interventions, and factors that lead to homelessness
- An understanding of racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and various forms of descrimination
- An understanding of the history of Northwest Territories including impacts of colonization and residential schools
- Prioritize cultural safety and cultural humility
- Basic computer skills, the ability to read and write on software including Microsoft Word and Google Docs
- Experience writing case notes
- Ability to collaborate well with others
- Ability to respond with empathy
- Organizational skills, ability to multitask
- Skills to manage conflicts between individuals and groups
- High level of adaptability
- Confidence in crisis and emergency situations
- An equivalent combination of relevant education (college diploma in youth work, social work, or university degree in social work related field) and/or relevant life experience (lived experience or previous work experience in this field)
