Description
Contributes to animal care services by:
- Providing nursing care to all hospitalized and surgical animals, including administering medications and treatments, as well as, monitoring the health of animals;
- Assisting with sample collection, preparation of samples for analysis or shipping;
- Preparing animals for surgery and assists in surgical procedures;
- Prepares surgical facility, including cleaning equipment and administering medications;
- Monitors anesthesia during surgical procedures;
- Performing dental prophylaxis procedures;
- Sets up and performs radiograph procedures with digital radiograph equipment;
- Assisting Veterinarian with patient exams, including patient restraint, injections and administering medication;
- Assisting with animal emergencies and providing intensive care treatments as required;
- Assisting/performing euthanasia procedures under the direction of the Veterinarian;
- Maintaining accurate medical records;
- Cleaning work areas and cages;
- Providing after hour services on a shift rotation;
- Walking hospital dogs;
- Collecting and preparing samples for analysis;
- Performing in-house microbiology and parasitological tests using an IDEXX Chemistry and/or CBC blood analyzer and microscope;
- Preparing and/or analyzing other samples as requested by Veterinarian;
- Performs ECG telemedicine procedures
- Maintaining inventory stock counts by recording sales through the Cornerstone inventory system;
- Assisting with shipping and receiving of stock;
- Ordering, documenting and maintaining control drug stock;
- Participating in Year-end stock counts and data entry.
Ensures proper handling, storage and disposal of hazardous material;
- Ensures compliance with safety regulations with respect to use of equipment and hazardous chemicals as required by Workers’ Compensation and Safety Commission regulations, National Dosimetry Registry for radiation regulations, etc.
- Maintains equipment, trouble shoots and performs minor repairs and arranges for service and major repairs;
- Provides assistance to clients when other staff is unavailable;
- Answering phones when receptionist is unavailable;
- Participates in extraordinary meeting and prepares reports if needed;
- Provides services as required by Veterinarians and/or Supervisor.

Qualifications
Licence:
- Animal health technician (Preferred)
- Experience:
- veterinary technician: 1 year (Preferred)
