Prominent Performer, Houseboat B&B Operator Charged With Sexual Assault

Well-known Yellowknife actor, musician and houseboat B&B operator Daniel Gillis has been charged with three counts of assault and one count of sexual assault.

Two assault charges stem from 2014, while the other assault charge and the sexual assault charge are from this year. Gillis was arrested at the end of May and appeared in court on May 29 to have the charges read.

The complainant, who asked not to be named at this time, said they’d been advised not to comment to media on the case. Gillis, when reached by EDGE, denied the charges.

“These charges are going to court and I’ll prove them all false,” he said.

Details relating to the case are not contained in the available documents.

Gillis is a familiar figure in Yellowknife’s theatre scene, having, among other projects, played a leading role in three Ptarmigan Ptheatrics productions at NACC:  My Fair Lady, Les Misérables and Mary Poppins. Since moving to Yellowknife in 2008, he’s been a staple in the music scene as Yellowknife’s best known tenor, performing and writing music for Aurora Chorealis as well as founding a boys choir.

He’s also known as the co-owner of the Yellowknife Bay Floating B&B, a houseboat bed and breakfast that’s been featured in publications across the country.

In a Facebook note posted two weeks after his arrest, Gillis wrote, “Before you make judgements based on what you’ve heard, I ask you to look in your heart and think about what you know and feel about me. I am not a perfect person, but I strive to be a positive influence in every facet of my life.”

Gillis is scheduled to next appear in court in September.
