Description

Northern Mosaic Network (NMN) is seeking a candidate for the Mentorship + School Supports Coordinator position. The person in this position is NMN’s connection to schools across the NWT, through establishing a network of GSAs (gender and sexuality alliance clubs in schools), supporting schools in setting up their GSA, facilitating training and workshops to school staff and administration, developing NMN’s children/youth workshops, connecting with CYCCs, and doing monthly meet-ups with GSAs around the territory. This position also oversees NMN’s mentorship program, beginning with a pilot in Yellowknife and expanding to all communities in the NWT.

Working Conditions

The successful candidate must be located in Yellowknife. This position is full-time, meaning an average of 37.5 hours per week. Specific hours will be discussed during the interview process as NMN staff have flexible schedules. You can expect to report to the NMN Main Office located at 5112 52nd Street (flexibility to work part-time from home is an option after the first three months).

This position may require travel to support GSA-led community initiatives (such as Prides) throughout the school year.

Compensation: $35.00/hour + Benefits + Northern Bonus

Employment Term: January 16th, 2023 to March 31st, 2024 (position to be extended dependent on funding)

Responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities

Territorial Gender + Sexuality Alliance Network: Establishing a network that spans the entire territory and welcomes GSA support staff from each of the 33 communities. Conducting regular meetings, maintaining an online database of resources, arranging professional development opportunities and sitting in on other district network meetings (ex. YK1’s monthly GSA network meetings) are all responsibilities under this position.

GSA and Student Support: Helping schools without GSAs get theirs started, and meeting regularly with students in GSAs around the territory to develop relationships with schools and youth. As well, connecting with Child + Youth Care Counsellors (CYCCs), and students to Peer Support Appointments and unique program opportunities.

Educational Activities Development: Developing curriculum for students to use when holding their GSA meetings and creating fun and educational activities that schools and NMn staff can facilitate with students of a variety of ages.

Mentorship Program: NMN has developed a mentorship program connecting 2SLGBTQIPA+ youth to older generations of 2SLGBTQIPA+ people in their communities. Screening, interviewing and training of mentors, launch of a pilot version in Yellowknife, and eventual growth expansion to offer to all communities in the NWT are all responsibilities under this position.

Training Facilitation: Connecting with schools to arrange for teachers, administration and school support staff to partake in NMN’s training to support 2SLGBTQIPA+ students in schools, and facilitating the training. 

Youth Advisory Committee: NMN is creating a youth advisory committee with representation from each of the regions. Part of this position’s responsibilities include supporting the creation and development of the Committee.

Budgeting and Grant Writing: Manage a small budget and apply for additional funding to support the work of this position.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience

Organizational Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience in working for a non-profit organization

  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, including youth - amount of experience will be considered in lieu of formal education

  • Experience working in youth-centred spaces or organizations

  • Experience with frontline service delivery

  • Knowledge of and experience working with Black, Indigenous and racialized communities

  • Historical context of land and Indigenous groups in the NWT

  • Capable of working collaboratively with a team, as well as independently

  • Grant writing experience considered an asset

  • Knowledge of technology such as G Suite, Zoom, Canva, Discord and social media

  • Criminal Record Check with clear Vulnerable Sector Screening required

Position-Specific Qualifications & Experience

  • Formal education or equivalent (example: diploma or degree in social work, teaching, youth work)

  • Supervisory experience - minimum 2 years experience

  • Program facilitation - amount of experience will be considered in lieu of formal education

  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to make phone calls and craft emails
