BREAKING: Denecho King, Accused Murderer, Escapes From Jail

 Accused murderer Denecho King has escaped custody from the North Slave Correctional Centre and a significant police operation is currently taking place in the vicinity of the centre. Police vehicles are in several locations and were conducting traffic stops. Officers in camouflage outfits and a police dog were seen in the Woolgar Ave. area. King is 5’7” and of medium build and was last seen wearing a green shirt and grey sweatpants. He was in custody ahead of a trial for second-degree murder and attempted murder.* The Fieldhouse and Multiplex are both currently closed.  The public is cautioned not to approach King. UPDATE: 1:50 p.m., August 10: There are currently police traffic stops in place on Highway 3 and the Ingraham Trail, All vehicles are being inspected.

UPDATE: 2:10 p.m: The RCMP have sent out an update indicating King is still at large. It also adds more on his appearance: “Twenty three year old Denecho KING is described as 5’8” and 150 lbs.   KING has a light facial hair (mustache) and a short crew cut.  Yellowknife RCMP want to remind the public to be vigilant as KING could change his clothing. If anyone believes they’ve spotted KING or have seen something suspicious please contact the Yellowknife Detachment at (867)765 3956.”

The Multiplex and the Fieldhouse are once again open, after being closed to the public earlier in the afternoon. There are still Municipal Enforcement officers on site checking the IDs of people entering the buildings.

*Correction: the initial version of this story indicated that King was in custody awaiting charges. He was in fact charged back in May 2015. He is awaiting trial, with the preliminary inquiry schedueled to begin in November.
