This evening at the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre, Yellowknife musician Natasha Duchene launches her second album, Kindred. Recorded in Yellowknife over the past three months with violinist Andrea Bettger and cellist Anne-Marie Guedon, the eight-track release collects music Duchene has been working on over the past decade.
“I think the concept [for the album] was born two years ago, doing a show with Andrea and Anne-Marie, at NACC. I loved the sound, and wanted to do an album with that sparse treatment of these songs,” says Duchene.
The music video for “Softly” was filmed by California filmmaker Mikal Jakubal, who Duchene met at a desert retreat in Southern California.
“He shot this mesmerizing drone footage of ocean waves, and was wanting to put some music too it,” says Duchene. He’d used one of her songs for the rough edit. “The song was going to be on the album, so we decided once I release it, we’d tighten up a few cuts [in the film] and use it as a music video for the song.”
Tickets to Friday’s show are $20. Starts at 7:30 p.m at NACC.
